New Years Resolutions

Unpopular opinion: New Years resolutions ROCK! So many people love to bash the concept of setting a New Years resolution by saying things like:

🗣 “You shouldn’t need a new year to start working on a goal.”⁣

🗣 “January 1 is no different than any other day of the year.”⁣

🗣 “RESOLUTIONS ALWAYS FAIL.”⁣

If you’ve fallen victim to believing any of these comments, it’s more than likely you won’t set that goal or even believe that you’re capable of making this change.

Technically, there is no best time to set a goal, BUT there are benefits to setting goals during a time that is meaningful to you. For example, the start of a new job, a new month, a new location, and, of course, A NEW YEAR!

During times like these, there’s that “fresh start feeling” that helps initiate the motivation to kickstart you towards working on your goal(s). So, you should use this to your advantage!

Here are a few tips to make sure those resolutions really stick this year:

TAKE ACTION. Yes, even if it’s the smallest step towards your goal! The daily actions that are required to reach your goal might start to feel monotonous or boring, so find some gratification within those daily actions. You won’t see results if you continue to decide to take the easy route — change requires effort and action.

ASK FOR SUPPORT. Communicate with the people you love that you’re working towards a specific goal and ask for their support. If you feel you need extra support/accountability, think about hiring a coach who can help you! Social support matters more than you’d expect.

LEARN FROM SETBACKS. When we start something new, we don’t expect to be a master right away. Instead of throwing in the towel when you “mess up,” reframe your thinking to view this experience as an opportunity to learn. Look at the situation and ask yourself, “How can I be better prepared next time?” This will increase your likelihood to succeed the next time you encounter a similar experience.

To make sure that these tips REALLY work for your resolutions, you MUST believe that you’re capable of change.
