Truth About the Scale

weight loss scale

I remember this one time when I was invited to an event after college and didn't go because of the scale.

That excited, free, zero-cares-in-the-world feeling immediately vanished the second I saw a number I wasn't happy with.

It didn't matter that I had a great week leading up to it; that my skin was glowing; that I had the PERFECT dress to wear.

That number ruined my night, and I wish I never let it — because it really didn't have to!

The truth about the scale

The scale tells us one thing: how much we weigh.

It doesn't tell us:

👉 Why we're a pound up or down than we expected

👉 That our weight can fluctuate 4-11 pounds in ONE DAY

👉 Our muscle-to-fat ratio

👉 What bodily fluids are literally weighing our bodies down (e.g. food in our systems or 💩)

And most importantly: that other factors like stress, hormonal changes, sleep, our menstrual cycle, bloating, and dehydration might be playing a part.

Therefore, the scale is giving us 100% surface-level information that doesn't actually serve us all that much.

What you should actually use to measure your progress

I have my clients take progress photos & measure themselves with measuring tape to track progress. These are both great ways to track how you're doing!

Measuring tape shows the exact amount of fat lost from different parts of the body like our hips, waists, legs and arms, in inches. Progress pictures also help us actually SEE how far we've come and where muscle growth or fat loss is happening.

The scale can't do either of those things!

I also encourage all my clients to practice:

✨ Journaling their thoughts and feelings

✨ Logging or tracking their healthy habits, nutrition and workouts

✨ Being mindful about how they're feeling (e.g. feelings of more confidence and positivity = success!)

I feel strongly that our journey mentally and emotionally is just as important and insightful. If we're feeling amazing in our own skin, why would we let a silly number instantly take that away from us?

Practice this next time the scale gives you anxiety:

When the scale gives bad vibes only, here's an affirmation to recite:

"Regardless of what the scale says, I am in control of my body and my health.”
