5 signs your metabolism has slowed down

In simple terms, your metabolism helps your body process the food you eat in order to produce and burn energy.

In general, a fast metabolism is better and more efficient at this whole process and helps to prevent the body from storing excess fat.

Your metabolism isn't just one process in your body, it's made up of a number of functions which is why it is important to ensure you're actively looking after your health and well-being in all areas.

If you're struggling to lose weight but you're not sure why it could be that your metabolism has slowed. There are many reasons why it could have slowed however one of the main reasons is that as you age your metabolism naturally slows which can work against you if you’re trying to lose weight and get fitter.

All is not lost though! At the end of this blog I tell you what can be done to REVERSE a slowing metabolism.

But for now, let's investigate 5 signs your metabolism could be slowing down...

You’re having digestive issues. With a slower metabolism, your body needs more time to process food which can lead to gas, bloating, and even constipation.

You’re feeling foggy in the mind. Perhaps you’re having difficulty concentrating, remembering things or struggling to focus on tasks. You might also be feeling ‘hangry’. If you've not heard this term before, it's when you're hungry and you can feel yourself getting angry or frustrated up until the point you eat.

You’re suffering from hormonal imbalance. This can show up as dry skin, thinning hair, low sex drive, and feeling cold. Issues with your thyroid also come under this category. The thyroid is responsible for how quickly you burn calories so an imbalance in this area can cause weight gain.

You're living in a caloric deficit. Yes, you read that right! If you dramatically cut your calories all of a sudden you risk slowing your metabolism down, affecting the rate at which you can lose weight. Extreme calorie deficits can also lead to restriction and binging causing weight gain in the long term.

You're feeling fatigued. As we’ve covered a slow metabolism means the process of breaking down food and turning it into energy is slower. This has a negative knock-on effect on your overall energy levels, can lead to feelings of fatigue, and tire you out quicker.

If you've recognised anything here that you're struggling with don't worry! It’s not all doom and gloom.

You can reverse a slowed metabolism with a reverse diet. This is a process whereby you slowly and gradually increase your total caloric intake by tracking macros so that eventually, your metabolism can handle a LOT more food again.
