What makes a sustainable lifestyle?

If you have been in my world even for 5 minutes you’ll know that I am all about sustainable habits, but what exactly does that mean and what defines a sustainable lifestyle?

Well, as we’re all our own people, a sustainable lifestyle looks a little different for everyone so today we’re going to explore some of the ways you can figure out what this can look like for you.

Movement

Regular movement of your body is SO important but so many people equate exercise with this horrible thing they really don’t wanna do. It doesn’t have to be that way!

With exercise, it’s KEY to find something that you enjoy and can do regularly whether that's walking, swimming, weight training, cycling, running, yoga, etc. the list is endless!

But the point is that there is something out there for you that you will enjoy doing and that is how you make movement a sustainable habit in your everyday life.

Food

Next up, your nutrition. We have been told SO MANY things about food that it’s genuinely difficult to know what to believe and who to trust anymore. But you simply cannot go wrong when it comes to eating fresh fruit and vegetables, lean protein and whole grains.

I am a firm believer in having a balanced lifestyle so I’m not going to sit here and tell you not to eat ice cream, chocolate or crisps. All of those things can be eaten as part of a balanced meal plan i.e. as long as you’re eating the more nutrient-dense foods, then there’s no problem in bringing in some of those delish treats you love so much.

Don’t forget to keep up with your hydration! You want to be drinking a minimum of 80 oz of water per day.

Mindset

I couldn’t write this blog around sustainable habits and not include mindset. Again it is something I am so passionate about as I don’t believe you can just work on the body without having your mindset in check.

Why is it so key? Because you’re bound to have those days where you want to give up, your motivation has run away, and you feel like crap. What is going to get you through those days? You guessed it, your mindset!

Personally, I am a big fan of cracking out my journal and working through my stuff that way, as well as being mindful of my choices in life and in my everyday.

But you can start to figure out what works for you and your mindset - whether that’s daily walks, meditation, time away from screens and in books - whatever that might look like for you, as long as you are doing something daily that contributes to the development of your mindset.

Three key pillars

Your movement, nutrition and mindset are three key pillars in creating sustainable habits. Once you get these nailed in a way that works for you, you will truly start to cultivate a sustainable lifestyle that works for you.
